Basic Guide on How to Make Sinkers at Home

Author: Dave From Hooked Online

Making your own sinkers is a great way to save money and get exactly what you need for fishing. Here’s a simple guide to get started.

Safety First

Melting lead releases toxic fumes, so always work outside in a well-ventilated area, away from kids and pets. Wear a charcoal filter mask, gloves, and protective clothing. If you feel unwell, stop immediately.

What You’ll Need

  • Clean lead (free of dirt, grease, and moisture—wet lead can splatter)
  • A gas burner or heat source
  • A solid saucepan
  • A ladle for pouring
  • A sinker mould
  • Two bricks, a mould vice or any type of strong clamp
  • Tin snips for trimming excess lead
  • Welding gloves for handling hot materials
  • Wire rod to make the sinker hole (PLEASE NOTE MOST SINKER MOULDS DO NOT COME WITH WIRE RODS)

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Prepare Your Lead
If your lead isn’t clean, melt it down first and remove impurities before making sinkers.
  2. Melt the Lead
Heat the lead in a saucepan over a gas burner. It takes about 10-15 minutes to fully melt.
  3. Set Up the Mould
Place the mould between two bricks or a simple mould vice, ensuring it's stable. Warm the mould near the heat source to help the lead flow smoothly.
  4. Pour the Lead
Preheat your ladle by dipping it into the molten lead. Fill it halfway and pour slowly into the mould. A steady pour prevents air pockets and ensures a clean finish.
  5. Release the Sinkers
Let the lead cool slightly, then tap the mould open. Trim off excess lead with tin snips and drop the sinkers into a tray.
  6. Final Touches
Store your sinkers in a tray with a bit of water and let them roll around in your car or ute for a few days. This dulls the shine and smooths out edges.

Quick Tips

  • Keep your saucepan topped up with lead for a steady workflow.
  • A butane burner melts lead faster than LPG.
  • Bike spokes make great mould rods for sinkers just remember to coat them in oil for easy removal.

With a bit of practice, you can make a year’s supply of sinkers in just a morning!
